Isle Royale National Park, or ISRO for short, is a very unique national park. Unlike Yellowstone or Grand Canyon, there aren't any 'oh my gosh, would you look at that' type sights. The sights are more peaceful and private, and watery.

As the name would suggest, it is an island very near the Canadian border, on Lake Superior. You can take a boat or a very expensive seaplane. I chose boat. 3 1/2 hours on a medium-sized boat is not great, but it is livable. As you disembark you are divided into 2 groups, backpackers and those staying at the lodge. The backpackers get about a half hour orientation, those os us staying at the lodge just have to pay our entry fee. Thank goodness I am 62 and now have a lifetime, Golden Age pass, so I got in free!

Once there, you are free to roam about, hike, fish, rent a boat, etc. I had lunch. After checking into the comfortable, but very dated lodge, I grabbed my camera and headed out on a 3.6 mile hike to Suzy's Cave, a rock formation carved by water. About 1/3 of the way to the cave, I rounded a bend on the trail and came upon a moose feeding near the trail. I snapped a whole bunch of pictures and after about 30 minutes of moose encounter, he wandered off.

I hiked to the cave and back and hungrily approached the restaurant at 8:45 for dinner. They were closed. They closed at 7:30. 7:30!!! Who closes a restaurant at 7:30. Luckily Janet had sent me of with a package of turkey jerky and a chocolate chip cookie. Not a fancy dinner, but man, it tasted great!
